You’re my happy place. Wherever you go. I love you.

Months of Planning, for the Perfect Moment

About eight months before November 15, 2025, I started planning.

First, was the ring. I knew I wanted to get a non-traditional ring for a unique person. I’m sure all the guys say that, but I believe the ring is an extension of my love and understanding for Samina, so I had the ring designed and it was being made. I wanted to pay respects to her Pakistani roots with intricate linework and tie in other jewelry I had gotten her in the past containing blue sapphires so that she could wear them together.

There was a problem with the jeweler selling the diamond I selected, and the CEO told the salesman to upgrade my ring to the next size of diamond since it was their fault. That turned out to be a a full .5 karat bigger!

For weeks, unbeknownst to her, I had the ring in my pocket. I would periodically take it out and snap a photo of her with it, leading up to the proposal time.

Sometimes, I got a little too bold, pulling the box out while we were in bed next to each other.

I even got friends and family involved. She never caught me!

I convinced Samina to join me at the tail end of an architectural conference I was speaking at in Colorado. She joined me for the weekend. After speaking, I went to Mount Falcon in Denver to find the perfect spot. I coordinated with a photographer to find the perfect spot at the perfect time; the Golden Hour.

Samina arrived and I convinced her that were going to take photos for a holiday card.

I don’t do holiday cards.

After getting some nice clothes to wear, we headed to the spot, which is a popular spot for both photographs and hiking. We arrived ahead of our photographer, so I had to stall Samina while he got into place.

Our photographer approached a couple who was going on a hike.

Photographer: Hey, I have a client who I’m trying to get close to for his proposal. Do you mind if I follow you and look like I’m with you? In fact, I’ll take a nice photo and I’ll send it to you for your troubles!

Husband: …No.

Photographer: Wow, that’s…that’s not the answer I was expecting…

Wife: Um, yeah, we’re going to help this guy out! (Looks at her husband) What’s wrong with you??

Husband: I just don’t want to.

Wife: (glaring at husband) Uh, yes we are.

So the photographer gets into position.

Samina: Who is going to take our photo?

Me: I’ll just ask that guy to. (Points to photographer)

Samina: What? You can’t ask a photographer on duty to take photos!

Me: It’ll just be one. (To photographer) Sir, can you take a photo?

Photographer: Sure!

Me: Ok, Samina, look out into the hills. We’ll take a silhouette shot first, with the sun!

Samina gets into position. I step backwards, and kneel.

Samina: It’s so bright!

Me: That’s not the only thing that’s bright.

Samina doesn’t turn around for what feels like an eternity. When she finally does…

Me: You’re my happy place. Wherever you go. I love you. Will you marry me?

She eventually turns and says Yes. Then she notices the photographer and figures out that he was there for us. We then had a proposal photoshoot to commemorate the day.
