Volunteerism for Connection and Love

The Global Encounters Dubai 2025 was a large international gathering designed to foster cultural exchange, leadership development, and community service among youth and adults from diverse backgrounds. Hosted in Dubai, the event brought together 1,400 athletes and nearly 30,000 participants from around the world to engage in workshops, discussions, and activities focused on building bridges across cultures and faiths.

Volunteerism holds a special place within the Ismaili Muslim community. It is considered an essential expression of faith, promoting values such as compassion, service, and collective responsibility. For Ismaili Muslims, volunteering is not just a duty but a means to strengthen community bonds, support communal institutions, and foster personal growth. Through acts of service, individuals contribute to the well-being of society and uphold the principles of humanity and ethical conduct that are central to Ismaili teachings.

As a couple of different faiths, we volunteered nearly 80 hours over 10 days at the Global Encounters Dubai 2025 event. This experience was transformative and meaningful for both of us. For Samina, it was an opportunity to live out the values of service and faith. For Chris, actively participating in volunteer work was a way to honor, support, and better understand Samina’s beliefs and community traditions.

Our shared commitment to volunteering demonstrated how interfaith relationships can enrich both individuals and communities. It showed that service transcends religious boundaries, creating space for mutual respect, understanding, and collaboration. For Samina, it was connecting her life with her community, sharing her love, and revitalizing her faith. For Chris, supporting Samina through volunteering was an act of love and solidarity, reinforcing the idea that community service is a universal value that can unite people of diverse backgrounds.
